CONSORTIUM OF LEADING RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS IN FRANCE SIGN A $7.2 MILLION CONTRACT WITH THOMSON SCIENTIFIC
More than 60,000 French Researchers & 400,000 Scholars Can Now Gain New Insight into Global Scientific and Scholarly Research
Philadelphia, PA USA, London UK — September 11, 2006 — Thomson Scientific, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information solutions to the worldwide research and business communities, today announced that a consortium of 47 leading French academic and government organizations, led by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST) and Couperin, have signed a three year, US$7.2 million contract with Thomson Scientific to access ISI Web of KnowledgeSM.
More than 60,000 researchers and 400,000 students at these organizations will now have access to ISI Web of Knowledge , which includes world class databases offering superior scholarly coverage, most notably Web of Science® . The multidisciplinary nature of the databases available on ISI Web of Knowledge, including natural sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities content from the world's most authoritative publishers, was a key factor in the deal."Couperin is delighted with this agreement. It enables many more universities and researchers to benefit from the wealth of scientific information in Web of Science,” said Francois Cavalier, head of the negotiating team at Couperin.
Marc Guichard, vice director at INIST noted: “Access to the citation indices in Web of Science will be a key factor in creating a high profile national research network in France."
Dr Marthe Melguen, Director of the Perouse Library and Coordinator of the Ifremer libraries commented: "Researchers and engineers at the Ifremer Institute have discovered Web of Science with great interest, particularly Science Citation Index Expanded™ which enables them to search bibliographic information from global scholarly science and technical journals. Because the Ifremer Institute subscribes to Web of Science with backfiles back to 1975, they have been able —with the help of the Perouse Library (BLP) and information specialists at the Documentation Center of the Sea—to calculate in good time the research indicators requested by the Ministry. The Ifremer Institute will continue to introduce their researchers and engineers to the other databases in ISI Web of Knowledge , including Journal Citation Reports® and Essential Science IndicatorsSM."
Under terms of the contract, all consortium member libraries now have access to:
- Web of Science — multidisciplinary current and retrospective information from approximately 8,700 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world
- ISI ProceedingsSM— bibliographic information and author abstracts from papers delivered at prestigious international meetings
- Index Chemicus® — text- and substructure-searchable database reporting over 200,000 new compounds each year from the world's leading organic chemistry journals
- Medline® — U.S. National Library of Medicine premier database of biomedicine and health sciences
"The magnitude of this agreement underscores Thomson's reputation as the premier provider of must-have research solutions for the world's leading scientists and scholars" said Keith MacGregor, Executive Vice President of Academic and Government Markets at Thomson Scientific. "Access to ISI Web of Knowledge enables French academic and governmental member organizations to search and analyze global information to improve their own research decisions. We look forward to nurturing this relationship in the years ahead."
In addition, some institutions have access to Journal Citation Reports — the recognized authority for evaluating journals, and to Essential Science Indicators, providing unique and comprehensive compilation of science performance statistics and science trends.
Members of the consortium include: INIST, Couperin, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medical (INSERM), CNRS, Ministere de la Recherche et de L'Enseignement Superieur, Agence Nationale de la Recherche and many universities and schools in Lyon, Strasbourg, Paris, Grenoble, Marseille and Montpellier.
Note to Media: You are invited to join Thomson Scientific's celebration of this agreement at the ADBU Exposition, 14 – 16 September 2006 in Grenoble, France .
