Thomson Reuters Recognises Most Innovative Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In India

Award Winners, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Sterlite Technologies, Lead Innovation Through Published Inventions and R&D Efficiency And Effectiveness

Bangalore, INDIA, — January 30, 2009 — The Scientific business of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today announced the two winners of the 2009 Thomson Reuters Innovation Award. The award recognises the most innovative small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with less than 5,000 employees headquartered in India for their spirit of innovation in R&D as it relates to all aspects of patent publications in India.

The award was presented at the InfoVision 2009 conference in Bangalore, India.  The award went to Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Sterlite Technologies Ltd in the Life Sciences and Corporate Services categories respectively for their achievements through patented technology as recorded in data from Thomson Innovation, the premier IP research and analysis solution from Thomson Reuters.

Said Mr. Wong Woei Fuh, Asia Pacific Commercial Director, Scientific business of Thomson Reuters, “We are very pleased to recognise India’s collective achievements in innovation. India is widely seen as an emerging powerhouse in the global research, life sciences and technology arena, and we look forward to its rapid development, particularly in the areas of literature publication and patent filing.”

Ms. Neelima Joshi, Vice President, Biological Research, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. said, “It is an honour and privilege to receive this prestigious recognition. Glenmark has always believed that innovation is the only path to sustainable growth. And to build a global pharmaceutical organization one must tread the path of innovation. Glenmark today is the leader in India in drug discovery with 13 NCE and NBE molecules in the pipeline. A number of our molecules are potential first-in-class targeting chronic diseases ailing the world. This recognition will go a long way as it will always serve to remind us that that we are being appreciated for the kind of work we are doing in the area of drug discovery.”

Criteria for the award included the number and impact of patents, the efficiency and effectiveness of research, and the impact of innovation as measured by patent citations. In order to provide a true comparison of innovation, it is necessary to count the number of inventions per entity, rather than the number of individual patents. The Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPI) by Scientific is the world's most comprehensive database of enhanced patent information. DWPI provides one descriptive record for each invention from inventors around the world and can therefore be used to measure the number of inventions as required. Previous winners were omitted from this analysis.

The importance of intellectual property as a major source for economic and technological development in India is demonstrated by the increasing creativity and impact of Indian research and technology throughout the world. The last five years have seen a near three-fold increase in patenting activity from 10,500 applications in 2002 to nearly 30,000 applications in 2007 at an average CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of over 23 percent. To foster this increase, the Indian Patent Office joined the patent offices of USA, Japan, South Korea, China and the European Union in offering online filing for trademark and patent applications.  The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) dominates the ranking table of the Top 10 patent assignees for all Indian inventions with over 2,000 inventions from 1968 to date and purchased Scientific's ISI Web of Knowledge platform to provide access to its 10,000 scientists across 45 labs in India, allowing all users to cross-search complementary resources.
