Thomson Reuters Accurately Predicts Four Nobel Prizewinners

Unmatched Quality and Depth of Data Creates Primary Source for Predictions

Philadelphia, PA, London, UK — November 6, 2009 — Thomson Reuters accurately predicted four Nobel Prize winners this year using data from Web of Science®, the largest and most comprehensive citation database available.

In September, Thomson Reuters nominated Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak as potential recipients of the Physiology or Medicine prize for their role in the discovery of and pioneering research on telomeres and telomerases. They received the prize on October 5, 2009.

In 2006, the company predicted that Oliver Williamson was in contention for the Economics prize for his research on corporate governance. He shared this year’s prize with Elinor Ostrom.

“Our successful predictions illustrate how Web of Science covers the most significant scientific research in all disciplines, across all time spans,” said David Pendlebury, citation analyst at Thomson Reuters. “Our prediction method, using citation counts as its fundamental point of departure, has over the years proven to be an accurate measure of research success and of Nobelists-to-be.”

Since 1989, Thomson Reuters has had a successful track record predicting Nobel Prize winners, in part by using data found in Web of Science and Essential Science Indicators, a database for quantitative analysis of performance and trends in global research.

Web of Science maintains the highest quality through a rigorous selection process, while also being the most comprehensive citation database with unmatched depth. It spans more than a century of cutting-edge research and provides straightforward access to the world’s leading journals and conference proceedings with more than 44 million source records and 700 million references. This coverage, going back as far as 1900 for some journals, includes seminal works of past Nobel laureates that still remain the foundation of today’s research.
