Taiwan’s Technological And Vocational Education Consortium Chooses Thomson Reuters Solutions For Its Research Needs

Taipei, TAIWAN — Dec 15, 2009 — Thomson Reuters today announced that Taiwan’s Technological and Vocational Education (TVE) consortium has chosen Web of Knowledge, the world’s largest citation environment of the highest quality scholarly literature, to fulfill the research needs of its 93 member institutions for a second year.

Taiwan’s Technological and Vocational Education (TVE) consortium covers a wide range of disciplines spanning technical courses in junior high schools, vocational schools and junior colleges to technological institutes as well as science and technology-oriented universities. Students, faculty and researchers will benefit from access to Web of Knowledge which will help them stay abreast of the latest research trends across multiple disciplines, and promote better understanding of research areas and facilitate collaboration opportunities with their international counterparts. The TVE consortium is focused on developing technology expertise and nurturing good technical professionals, hence their selection of Derwent Innovations Index by Thomson Reuters as one of their main resources in this endeavor.

Over 20 million researchers at over 3,800 institutions in 98 countries base their research, planning and budget decisions on the content and analytics they find in Web of Knowledge. Within Web of Knowledge, students, faculty and researchers can use Web of Science®, the foremost multidisciplinary bibliographic resource, to seamlessly access more than 11,000 of the most prestigious research journals from around the world and 110,000 conference proceedings, totaling 45 million documents and more than 1 billion cited references.

Said Professor Lee Wun-Hsing, Graduate Institute of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, and Library Director, National Taipei University of Technology, “We are grateful to the Ministry of Education for supporting the ‘Ministry of Education Shared Electronic Databases Purchasing Program for Technical and Vocational Institutions’ for two consecutive years. Through this program, we have adopted Web of Science, Derwent Innovations Index and other high-quality domestic and international academic databases for use by technical and vocational students and teachers throughout Taiwan. The improvement of academic electronic resources at technical and vocational institutions has not only increased the competitive advantage for teachers in both teaching and research, but has also raised the competitiveness of our students.”

Said Associate Professor Ning Hui-ju, History and Geography, General Education Center; and Library Director, Chienkuo Technology University, “In response to current trends, teaching and research resources provided by the libraries of universities and technical and vocational schools are no longer confined to paper-based books. With its advantages of time saving and convenience, electronic information is naturally favored by an increasing number of readers! However, the tremendous costs have also put many schools in a difficult financial position. To many libraries at technical and vocational schools, the problem of achieving a balance between demand for such resources and the benefits they bring has become a dilemma.”

Associate Professor Ning added, “In light of this situation, the project ‘Ministry of Education Shared Electronic Databases Purchasing Program for Technical and Vocational Institutions’ was established in the 2006 academic year to specifically deal with this dilemma. The program makes electronic resources available to technical and vocational institutions through a reasonable collective usage pricing arrangement. These resources include databases such as Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports, which enable technical and vocational teachers and students to use the system to find relevant literature, research papers and thesis, as well as to locate research topics much more easily. In addition, the Derwent Innovations Index patent retrieval database also provides guidance and assistance to the technical and vocational school community in the development and improvement of its own characteristics and specialties.”

Additionally, the consortium will benefit from two resources which are part of the Web of Knowledge suite. Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) offers a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals, with quantifiable, statistical information based on citation data. Derwent Innovations Index facilitates rapid, precise patent searching in chemical, electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering. This resource merges the value-added patent information from Derwent World Patents Index® with the patent citation information from Derwent Patent Citation Index®. Increased coverage includes utility models (similar to patents but with shorter term and less stringent patentability requirements) from China, Korea and Japan and all claims from China and Korea. There is additional in-depth indexing of Chinese and Korea patents.

Said Mr. Wong Woei Fuh, Asia Pacific commercial director at Thomson Reuters, “We are pleased that Web of Knowledge, which includes Web of Science®, continues to be the multidisciplinary resource of choice for tertiary institutions worldwide and in Taiwan as seen by the strong endorsement from the TVE consortium with its subscription renewal. As the leading global provider of intelligent information to academic and research communities, we have always been strongly committed to supporting higher education needs and research efforts in this part of the world.”
