DERWENT WORLD PATENTS INDEX ON QUESTEL.ORBIT IMPLEMENTATION

Q: How is the data organized within the new DWPI? What are the Invention and Member Patent (publication) Levels?

A: Two “levels” of data are now available within DWPI. The Invention Level is the traditional view of DWPI comprising bibliographic data, Thomson Scientific value-add title and abstracts, and general and, where appropriate, in-depth indexing.

The Member Patent Level allows users to search and display bibliographic data and general indexing information associated with individual documents that make up the patent family Invention Level. Additional data elements such as original titles and abstracts, claims, addresses and agent information are also present at the Member Patent Level.

The Member Patent Level data is fully searchable in separate database, DWPI Member View (DWPIMV).

Q: How do I search these Invention and Member Patent Levels?

A: You can continue to search DWPI as you have always done, using most of the same search qualifiers to search across the Invention Level. Some data from the Member Level is also available within DWPI so additional display qualifiers have been introduced for some of the specific data elements unique to the Member Patent Level (e.g. German Abstracts).

The DWPIMV file provides the original source data for each patent family member where available. Coverage varies by country and may include additional bibliographic information, original titles, abstracts and main claim (which may be displayed in the DWPI database using the PATVIEW display option).

Q: What fields make up the Basic Index?

A: The standard Basic Index comprises Thomson Scientific value-add fields and also now some First Level data, as follows:

  1. Thomson Scientific value-add title, title terms, additional words and all abstract words (including Novelty and Technology Focus, excluding Extension Abstracts and Documentation Abstracts), plus compound numbers.
  2. Original abstracts (in English, German and French), where available.

The DWPI Basic Index now incorporates the following fields:

  1. TI - DWPI value-add Title
  2. AB - DWPI value-add Abstract
  3. AW - DWPI Additional Words
  4. TT - DWPI Title Terms
  5. EAB - English Original Abstract
  6. FAB - French Original Abstract
  7. GAB - German Original Abstract
  8. NOV - Novelty Abstract (included in AB)
  9. TF - Technology Focus
  10. CN - Compound Numbers

Q: What will I retrieve and display now if I use the abstract AB index/display field?

A: The AB index still contains the Thomson Scientific value-add and original First Level data. You will therefore retrieve the Thomson Scientific value-add abstracts available for the Basic of the patent family. The Novelty field is also included in the AB index.

The AB display qualifier will display the Thomson Scientific value-add abstract which is available for the Basic of the patent family, plus the Novelty. The Technology Focus and English, German and French original abstracts are available for search and display separately.

A super index – Abstracts (/ABS) is also available, covering AB, NOV, EAB, FAB, GAB and TF fields.

Q: Can I choose to search and display just the Member Patent Level data?

A: Yes, to search the original patent data or family members it is necessary to use the DWPIMV file. DWPIMV contains records for each publications stage for each member found in a DWPI family. The DWPIMV Basic Index contains DWPI Title, Title Terms, Abstract, Novelty and Tech Focus as well as the following original patent data fields:

  • ET
English Original Title
  • FT
French Original Title
  • GT
German Original Title
  • OTI
Original Title, Other Language
  • EAB
English Original Abstract
  • FAB
French Original Abstract
  • GAB
German Original Abstract
  • MCLM
English Original Main Claim
  • FCLM
French Original Main Claim
  • GCLM
German Original Main Claim

Additional, separate search fields unique to the DWPIMV file include (where available) original patent assignee address, patent assignee country, original inventor, inventor country and legal representative.

Q: Can I search all of the existing DWPI fields within DWPIMV?

A: No, although some DWPI fields are present within DWPIMV, the following fields are not present included in this member level data file:

  1. DWPI value-add coding (Manual Codes, Class Codes, File Segments)
  2. Chemical indexing (Compound Numbers, Ring Index numbers, DWPI Registry numbers, DCR numbers, Key Words
  3. Polymer Indexing (Polymer Keywords, Plasdoc Multipunch, Plasdoc Key Serials)

Q: Can I display the 750,000 value-add Documentation Abstracts even though I am not a Thomson Scientific subscriber?

A: No, even though the text of these abstracts is now available for searching within File DWPX and the abstracts can still only be viewed by eligible subscribers within this file. Please contact your nearest Thomson Scientific office if you wish to discuss becoming an eligible subscriber to this data.

Q: Can I search in German and French language?

A: Yes, German and French language First Level data is available for some patent issuing authorities (original titles, abstracts and claims).

Q: How have umlauts and accents been handled?

A: Neither umlauts and accents are required for searching German or French-language First Level data.

Q: What is the PATVIEW display format and how do I use it?

A: The PATVIEW format allows you to display original titles, abstracts and main claims from the DWPIV file within DWPI.

After conducting a search in the DWPIMV data file you may automatically transfer your results to the family file DWPI by using the command XDWPI.
