Searching for US Patent Applications in the Derwent patent files on Dialog, STN and Questel.Orbit

Due to a change in the US Patent Law, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) was legally obliged to publish patent applications from 29 November 2000. However, the logistics of the USPTO internal publishing system meant that publication actually began in March 2001.
These US Applications have a different format to the US Granted Patents. As a result, Derwent has changed the way we process US patents for the following products: Derwent World Patents Index, Derwent Patents Citation Index, Derwent GENESEQ, Derwent GENESEQ FASTAlert, Derwent Crop Protection File, Derwent World Drug Alerts, Derwent Patents Preview and Derwent Biotechnology Abstracts.
The new US Application numbers are of the format CCYYYYNNNNNNNKK e.g. US20010000001A1 where CC = country code; YYYY = year; NNNNNNN = serial number and KK = kind code.
At present some systems are not able to handle the 11-digit serial number (YYYYNNNNNNN). So, for the immediate future, Derwent will be providing the new applications with a 10-digit serial number, where the first digit of the serial number (zero) has been dropped. At the beginning of each year the serial number will be reset to zero.
For example:
Published 11-digit serial number format e.g. US20010000001A1
Derwent 10-digit serial number format e.g. US2001000001A1
The publication number of the new published US application documents will be retrievable in the patent/publication number field. The following examples show how the Online Hosts will be handling the US application numbers:
