The Electrical Patents Index Manual Codes (EPI Manual Codes) User Guide is designed to assist users of the Electrical Patents Index service in making the best use of the classification and indexing scheme which Derwent applies to electrical and electronic patents. These codes, which have been assigned since the start of the EPI service, form a hierarchical indexing system, intended mainly for use in online search retrieval.
From 2006 this manual also includes Mechanical Transportation Q codes. These will be applied to all patent documents from 200601 and will be applied to highlight mechanical application or patents with mechanical novelty. The Q codes are designed to be used in conjunction with one another in the same way as the electrical manual codes are assigned, and they may also be applied in conjunction with the electrical manual codes when appropriate.
Because of the increased number of codes now included in the EPI Manual Codes manual, the guide has been divided into 3 parts. Part 1 covers codes Q through to T, Part 2 covers codes U through to X and Part 3 includes the index and appendices (including the IPC concordance table).
